Leading Brands Promote Sustainability Amidst Industry Uncertainty

Innova Market research found approximately 85% of US and UK consumers expect companies to invest in sustainability with efforts prioritized in responsibly sourced food, zero-waste, and eco-efficient packaging to protect the environment. Here’s how the leading food and beverage brands are incorporating sustainability into their product offerings right now.

Sourcing Sustainable Packaging

Evian released the brands first label-free water bottle, engraved with their logo and made from 100% recycled plastic. Diageo, maker of Smirnoff and Guinness, announced the creation of their sustainably sourced wood paper-based spirits bottle. In 2018, Kellogg’s pledged that 97% of their timber-based packaging comes from both recycled and certified-sustainable materials, with the ultimate goal of transitioning to 100% reusable, compostable packaging by the end of 2025.

 

Commitment to Coffee

McDonald’s created the McCafé Sustainability Improvement Plan, comprised of resourceful fertilizing methods and farmer education, as a framework to 100% sustainably sourced coffee by 2020. Nestle’s sustainability initiatives include conserving water, preventing deforestation, and creating biodiversity for their Nescafé coffee regions to ensure their coffee is 100% responsibly sourced by 2020. In a 5-year agreement made with World Coffee Research (WCR), a percentage of sales from Dunkin’s Original Blend coffee beans goes to WCR to support coffee sustainability.

Hershey’s cocoa is 100% certified sustainable as the company continues to preserve the ecosystem through programs like tree planting and agroforestry. They worked alongside farmers in 2019 to distribute 1.7 million shade and cocoa tree saplings. Within the next 2 years, Bumble Bee Seafoods plans to have 100% of their light tuna come from Marine Stewardship Council-certified fisheries that work with fishers to protect the oceans. Ben & Jerry’s combats climate change by investing in solar power equipment with the ultimate hope of transitioning to 100% renewable energy by 2050.
